What Are Your Eyes Fixed Upon?

by Lee Buford on August 17, 2010

I really enjoy the intimacy and depth of the conversation I’m blessed to experience in a small group Bible study setting. I’m part of a group that meets weekly, a treasured time when we have the opportunity to share thoughts from Sunday’s sermon, study, read God’s Word, and pray together. (Of course we do our share of eating and laughing too…we call that fellowship!)

This week our conversation was especially close to my heart. It was thought-provoking, challenging, and downright deep. The subject: keeping our eyes fixed upon Jesus.

We pondered several key questions:

  • How do you keep your eyes fixed upon Jesus?
  • What does that mean?
  • What does it truly mean to “die to self”?
  • What does that look like in today’s society…in our city?

The answers can be complex and elusive in our human state. We struggle to draw upon a physical or “realistic” model of what our lives should look like. Yes, we have great biblical examples like Paul from which to learn, but we often have difficulty picturing ourselves in such company, difficulty seeing how we could possibly be that committed and faithful to the Lord’s work.

But the answer lies in Jesus Himself. He is the answer…not Paul or Job or anybody else. And Paul’s example so effectively communicates that to us. He points to Jesus. He lives for Jesus. His eyes are fixed upon Jesus.

But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.  – Acts 20:24 – ESV

How about you… What are your eyes fixed upon?
