What Is It Costing You to Follow Jesus?

by Lee Buford on August 2, 2010

What are you giving up to follow Jesus? What is it costing you…really costing you?

The Bible is clear that we are to go and make disciples. And to do so, one must first be a disciple. Throughout the gospels Jesus makes it clear that following Him is a costly venture…a commitment to die daily to our personal selves, needs, and desires.

The bottom line is this… Following Jesus WILL cost you something!

History provides many accounts of men and women who have given much in the name of following Jesus…many of whom have given their very lives. Others have been persecuted beyond our imagination, lived lives of extreme poverty, or suffered in other ways that we find reprehensible by modern American standards. We are shocked at some of their stories, but we wouldn’t shouldn’t be…Jesus told us to expect it, to count on it.

18 “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me.  – John 15:18:21 – ESV

Yet we insist there’s a better way, a less costly route to take. Perhaps that’s our biggest problem…we are trying to create a model of discipleship that fits comfortably into our modern American lifestyles of pride and affluence. And perhaps even worse, we are trying to convince ourselves and others that we are actually living this watered-down, half-hearted commitment to our Lord and Savior.

So where do you stand? Do you desire to follow Him, to live the life He called us all to live?

Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,
– 2 Timothy 3:12 – ESV

If so, it will cost you something. It will cost me something. It will cost all of us something. And if we don’t know what it’s costing us, we probably aren’t living the life of a fully-committed disciple.
