We’ve Been Commissioned

When Jesus spoke to His disciples on the mountain in Galilee the charge was very clear… go and make disciples:

The Great Commission

16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” – Matthew 28:16-20

We refer to it as “The Great Commission”, and we use it as the guiding scriptures for our missional efforts in the Christian Church. However, we often lose sight of the fact that Jesus’ commissioning of His disciples was also individualistic and specific in nature. He commanded his disciples to go forth in obedience, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and commit their individual lives to making disciples. While He was speaking to the group, His message was intended for EACH disciple in the group.

This same commission applies to you and me, individually, as disciples of Christ.

It’s great to support your local church’s missions efforts. It’s great to give financially to support missionaries and organizations committed to the advancement of the Gospel. But writing a check is easy, right? And that’s not really fulfilling the command Jesus gave YOU to go make disciples.

How will you be obedient in fulfilling “The Great Commission” this week? Where will you go? Where is God calling you to go? What is He calling you to do in your home, in your city, and around the world? Who will you talk to and invest in? What are YOU doing to fulfill the commission you’ve received from Jesus?

You’ve been commissioned. We all have. Now what are we going to do about it?
