Victory Through Submission

by Lee Buford on October 8, 2010

Submission is one of those words we like to avoid. In 21st century America it symbolizes weakness, or giving up, to most. Submission is only associated with quitters and losers, right?

Wrong! Submission is a biblical mandate from God, and is required of anyone who truly desires to be a follower of Christ.

The Bible is clear that submission is the state in which we are to live as believers:

  • For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. – Romans 8:7
  • submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. – Ephesians 5:21
  • Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.  – Colossians3:18
(followed directly by husbands loving your wives as Christ loved the Church, and children submitting to the authority of your parents)
  • Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you. – Hebrews 3:17
  • Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. – James 4:7

And there are many other references to submission throughout the Word.

So why do we have such a hard time with this concept? For most of us it’s a matter of pride. In our sinful nature we desire to win, to be on top, to rule, and to be in control. We don’t want to willingly submit to anything or anybody, including God.

Romans 10:9 says, “because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” We gladly accept the salvation part of this verse, but we fight daily against the lordship.

It’s time we all yield and submit to God and His Word in our lives. It’s time we become okay with that. It’s time we desire that for own lives.

The reality is that the only place any of us will ever find true fulfillment, obedience, and holiness is when we are completely yielded, submitted, and humbled at the foot of the cross.

It’s the only place we will ever experience true victory. What’s holding you back?
