Training for Godliness

by Lee Buford on April 23, 2012

I’m a huge proponent of physical training, though I am not as committed at times as I should be. Weight training is tremendously beneficial. So is cardio and other forms of exercise. We all need to be engaged in regular exercise for our physical well-being.

But the Bible reminds us that it’s not the most important training we can do in life…

“for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” – 1 Timothy 4:8 ESV

Indeed, the most important training regimen we can undertake is the one that brings us closer to Jesus and furthers our godliness in the process. Daily, consistent time in the Word, in prayer, and simply sitting in meditation and worship at the foot of the cross is the only training program guaranteed to produce eternal results.

Train hard. Stay focused. Be diligent in your efforts.

Godliness is the goal for which we strive.
