This Is Why We Serve

by Lee Buford on April 12, 2010

For those of us who profess to follow Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior FAITH is what it’s all about.

Faith in Him, faith in His Word, and faith in His promises…all of which are the foundations of why we believe what we believe. As scripture teaches, faith is trusting and believing when we can’t see the proof. In fact, if we could see the proof beforehand it wouldn’t be “faith.”

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
– Hebrews 11:1 – ESV

That said, we should celebrate and praise God for the proof He chooses to show us, after the fact, in many situations. Sure, there are many things, situations, and questions for which we will never have an answer or explanation for this side of heaven. But in many situations I am confident that He reveals the “why” to us to validate what we are doing…to encourage our faith along the journey.

Last week I mentioned that our church had the opportunity to partner, along with several other churches, with Radiant Church here in Greenville to love and serve the folks in their community at their first annual Egg Drop. The event was outstanding, and everyone had a great time of fun and fellowship. (You can read more about it here.) But let’s be clear on our motive:  our intention was to love and serve these people in a manner in which they might see Jesus in us…a manner in which He would be glorified and exalted, and a manner in which He might use the Egg Drop to bring someone into right relationship with the Savior!

And to this end we were obedient…never knowing whether or not we might see the fruits of our efforts in this lifetime or not. Then yesterday, via Twitter, I saw an amazing affirmation of why we did what we did. Lisa Freeman, who serves at Radiant and coordinated the event, posted the following tweet:

Bam! Bingo! Praise God! This is what it’s all about!

This is why we did it! And this is why He did it! This is why He chose to reveal this particular fruit…that we might be encouraged and affirmed in our obedience to the things to which we are called in the future.

Indeed, as Lisa says, “That’s why we serve.”
