Standing Firm

by Lee Buford on January 25, 2011

Standing firm is a requirement for most all of our basic successes and endeavors in life, or so we’ve been told. We are taught to stand firm in our beliefs, to stand firm when confronted with evil, sin, or temptation, and to stand firm in the face of adversity. We are led to believe that if we just hunker down, dig in, and refuse to budge, we are standing firm and ultimately will prevail against whatever force or challenge we face.

And if we’re not successful we need to dig in a little deeper, be more resilient, and refuse to get beat. Right? Wrong!

As Christians we must remember that standing firm is a consistent message in the Bible. But it’s so much more than simply mustering up enough courage and willpower to plant ourselves against opposition at every turn. In what are we to stand firm? What is our foundation?

The answer throughout scripture is as consistent as the calling. We are to stand firm in God and His faithfulness, in the gospel, and in our faith.

In other words, standing firm has nothing to do with our own abilities, determination, or strength to fend off evil, adversity, or enemies. Standing firm does require a desire and willingness to be obedient to Him, an humility of spirit that longs to love, worship, and honor THE sovereign God who truly IS in control. But standing firm ultimately requires our total reliance on Him.

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. – Ephesians 6:13

Paul’s letters, and all of scripture for that matter, are filled with urgings for believers to stand firm. And, more importantly, they are filled with reminders that God is the only foundation on which we will find stable footing. Our own abilities to stand firm will never be sufficient.

The encouraging thing is that we DO have a means by which to stand firm…we are able capable of doing so. He is the foundation of our ability to stand firm.

What battles or circumstances are you attempting to stand firm in right now? In what areas of your life are you telling yourself that you just need to be more committed or do a better job? In what areas of your life are you NOT relying on God for the ability to stand firm?

Will you trust Him to provide the sure footing you need?
